At its centre, two fantastical winged beasts face one another across a tall, fan-shaped acanthus motif. Their textured, scale-like bodies, clawed feet, raised wings and expressive heads contrast beautifully with the smooth, flowing curves of the surrounding foliage.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe remainder of the panel is filled with exuberant scrolling acanthus leaves, palmettes and rosette motifs, arranged in a broadly symmetrical Renaissance-inspired design. The carving has considerable depth, with the ornament standing prominently against a dark, stippled ground. This recessed background is particularly effective, creating strong shadow and definition and giving the foliage and creatures an almost sculptural quality.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe oak has developed a rich, warm brown colour and attractive surface patina, with lighter highlights across the raised carving revealing the grain and emphasizing the detail.
