Silk ribbon with roses
L: 53 cm, W: 14 cm
Beautiful ribbon with roses over a green band in excellent condition and vibrant colours.
Dated from the 1840's and mounted on a stretcher on a satinized pink cotton base.
Ribbons were particularly in fashion in the 17th century and were used to adorn clothing and possessions and make them individual. Coventry in England and Lyons in France were the two established centres of silk manufacturers and the major centres for ribbon design. The Victorians lavishly used ribbons and the industry flourished as there were demands for yardage for dresses, underclothes, coats, cloaks and hats.
Synthetics and paper fibers were used after the Second World War and little gems like this are therefore to be treasured.
