- This item is a vintage scarab beetle brooch, typically associated with the "Egyptian Revival" jewellery periods. The scarab itself appears to be a carved glass that exhibits an iridescent green and purplish sheen, set within a gold-tone or possibly gold wire frame featuring small bead accents. The back of the glass is carved with hieroglyphics.
The piece is made in the Egyptian Revival style, a popular trend in decorative arts and jewelry that reoccurred after significant archaeological discoveries, such as Napoleon's campaign in the late 18th century, the opening of the Suez Canal in the Victorian era, and especially the discovery of King Tut's tomb in the 1920s. - In ancient Egypt, the scarab beetle was a powerful and sacred symbol of rebirth, regeneration, and resurrection. It was believed to bring good fortune, grant strength, and offer protection from evil.
- While some antique pieces were made from precious metals like 14k or 18k gold and featured real carved scarabs or semi-precious stones, costume jewelry versions from the 20th century often used materials like glass, resin, or gold-plated brass.
