John Gilbey Bowles (1929-2011)  was a British painter and printmaker born in Derbyshire in 1929. Showing artistic promise from an early age, he studied at Gravesend School of Art between 1943 and 1948 before continuing his education at the prestigious Royal College of Art from 1950 to 1953, where he further refined his distinctive artistic voice. During his studies he was awarded the highly regarded British Institute Scholarship in Engraving, recognition of both his technical skill and his considerable potential as a young artist.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Bowles established himself as a versatile and prolific artist, working across painting, printmaking and drawing. His subjects ranged widely, encompassing British landscapes, coastal scenes, figures and imaginative compositions, all unified by a sensitive handling of light, atmosphere and colour. His work frequently displays an impressionistic quality, favouring expressive brushwork and mood over strict realism.

Bowles remained creatively active throughout his life, continually exploring new ideas and themes while maintaining a deep affection for the British landscape and coastline. His later work demonstrates both technical confidence and imaginative breadth, including experimental and surreal compositions alongside the landscapes and coastal scenes for which he became particularly admired. His paintings continue to appear regularly at auction and remain appreciated by collectors for their warmth, immediacy and distinctly British character.

This painting of Winchelsea Beach, East Sussex, is an excellent example of Bowles' ability to capture the quiet charm of the English coast. Through loose, economical brushwork and a subtle palette of sea blues, greys and sandy pinks, he evokes the changing light and peaceful atmosphere of one of Sussex's most distinctive shorelines. The familiar timber groynes and figures gathered by the sea create a timeless scene that reflects both the artist's observational skill and his affection for Britain's coastal landscapes.
