Viarmes oil painting Maurice Tisseyre

£260.00

Viarmes, 1945, signed Maurice Tisseyre (right bottom hand corner)

Oil on panel , framed in a modern maroon frame, 30.4x 22.2 cm

Painted in the aftermath of the Second World War, Viarmes, 1945 captures a rare sense of peace and renewal. Set in the gently rolling hills north of Paris, this tranquil landscape bathes in soft light and drifting cloud formations. A solitary female figure gazes toward the painter  (most probably his wife, they married in 1943)— as if reflecting on all that has passed, and the quiet promise of what lies ahead.

Maurice Tisseyre’s mastery of atmosphere and colour shines through in this early work. The palette is tender and harmonious, the brushwork lyrical yet controlled. Every element — the horizon, the texture of the land, the vastness of the sky — works together to evoke stillness and grace.

Viarmes is more than a landscape; it is a meditation on calm after turmoil, on light returning to the world.

Maurice Tisseyre (1920–2017) was a French painter celebrated for his luminous landscapes, seascapes, and architectural views that combine Impressionist sensitivity with modern balance. Born in Estagel, near Perpignan in southern France, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was awarded diplomas in both Fine Arts and Applied Arts.

Tisseyre shared a studio in the famed Cité Montmartre aux Artistes, a hub for painters, sculptors, and musicians in the heart of Paris’s 18th arrondissement. Alongside his wife, the artist Janine Marca, he worked within a vibrant community that valued craftsmanship, experimentation, and artistic integrity.

Throughout his career, Tisseyre exhibited widely — at the Salon des Artistes Français, the Salon des Indépendants, the Biennale de Menton, and the Grand Palais. His work, acquired by the French State, reflects an enduring fascination with light and place: from the vineyards and coastlines of his native Roussillon to the canals of Venice and the sunlit towns of the Côte d’Azur.

Tisseyre’s paintings are quietly radiant — imbued with gentleness, balance, and a profound respect for nature. His art captures what is fleeting yet eternal: the interplay between land, sky, and human presence.
