This Antique Staffordshire Blue and White Adams custard jug, produced between 1913 and 1940, showcases the Chinoiserie pattern with a center cartouche featuring a pheasant on a basket and dark blue print. Its notable design, registered in 1913 with the backstamp 'Registration Applied For' and the number 623294, is a revival of early English Pottery (and originally a Chinese design). The distinct 'cracked ice' background adds to its appeal.
One one side is a cartouche with three Chinese men and on the other the pheasant on a basket amongst flowers.
Transfer printing was developed to meet English consumers' demand for affordable, ornately decorated wares, with a preference for oriental designs like Chinese blue. This innovation significantly lowered the cost and production time of dinnerware sets, previously only accessible to the affluent due to the necessity of hand painting.
In beautiful condition with no cracks or grazing.
