These hardened steel dies were once used in the traditional technique of metal stamping. A thin sheet of copper, brass, silver or gold was pressed into the die to create a raised, detailed design. The work was done on heavy presses, producing multiples with crisp, precise relief.

Their dies produced components for buttons, medals, jewellery but also furniture fittings (like keyholes or leg pieces) and decorative accessories (like cutlery for example).

From the late 19th to early 20th century, Paris was a major centre for this craft- particularly in the area of the Marais.

Today, these tools appeal to jewellers, metalworkers, designers and collectors. They can be reused for production, displayed as sculptural objects, or kept as historic examples of French metalworking. They make great desk objects and are real little curiosities.
