Capturing the glamour and elegance of the French Riviera between the wars, this striking Monte-Carlo travel poster was designed by celebrated French artist Roger Broders, one of the masters of Art Deco poster design. The scene overlooks the famous tennis courts of Monte Carlo, with players in action against a backdrop of golden sands, azure Mediterranean waters, and the dramatic coastline of the Côte d'Azur.
Broders became renowned during the 1920s and 1930s for his highly stylised travel posters, characterised by bold colours, geometric forms, and an atmosphere of effortless sophistication. Many of his most iconic works were commissioned by the Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée (PLM) Railway Company, which promoted travel to the sun-drenched destinations of southern France. His posters helped define the golden age of European travel, inviting visitors to experience the luxury and beauty of places such as Monte Carlo, Nice, and Cannes.
This piece is a later edition printed in 1989 using offset lithography by the French Railway Company, with whom Broders enjoyed a long and successful relationship. Faithfully reproducing the original design from around 1930, it retains all the charm and elegance of the Art Deco era.
