19th-Century Carved Oak Panel with Griffins and Acanthus

£260.00

Feature

ONE OF A KIND

A striking 19th-century carved oak panel, richly decorated with scrolling acanthus foliage and a pair of opposing mythical griffin-like creatures.

The elongated rectangular panel is framed by a simple moulded oak border, enclosing a remarkably dense and deeply carved composition. At its centre, two fantastical winged beasts face one another across a tall, fan-shaped acanthus motif. Their textured, scale-like bodies, clawed feet, raised wings and expressive heads contrast beautifully with the smooth, flowing curves of the surrounding foliage.

The remainder of the panel is filled with exuberant scrolling acanthus leaves, palmettes and rosette motifs, arranged in a broadly symmetrical Renaissance-inspired design. The carving has considerable depth, with the ornament standing prominently against a dark, stippled ground. This recessed background is particularly effective, creating strong shadow and definition and giving the foliage and creatures an almost sculptural quality.

The oak has developed a rich, warm brown colour and attractive surface patina, with lighter highlights across the raised carving revealing the grain and emphasizing the detail. The reverse remains plain, showing the substantial solid timber from which the panel was carved.

Probably conceived as an architectural or furniture element, the panel makes a highly decorative piece in its own right and displays particularly well as wall-mounted architectural ornament.
