Breton port oil painting

£425.00

Signed Lavernia and on back marked Bretagne Lavernia.

55 x 38.5 cm

This evocative harbour scene captures the quiet beauty of the Breton coastline, a subject that inspired many artists drawn to the region's timeless fishing villages and ever-changing light. Softly moored boats rest in the tidal waters before a cluster of whitewashed cottages, while distant hills dissolve beneath a luminous, cloud-filled sky. Painted with Lavernia's characteristic sensitivity, the muted palette of sea greens, silvery blues, and earthy ochres creates a wonderfully tranquil atmosphere, inviting the viewer into a moment of stillness.

Born in Barcelona in 1925, Angelina Lavernia studied at the Acadèmia Tàrrega, where she met fellow artist François Batet. After marrying, the couple travelled to Madrid to study and copy the great masters at the Prado Museum before settling in France in 1951, where they lived and worked as professional artists in the Paris region. Together they became part of the post-war revival of figurative painting, each developing a distinctive artistic voice while sharing an exceptional technical foundation.

Lavernia's paintings are celebrated for their intimate, deeply personal vision. Although firmly rooted in the figurative tradition, her compositions possess a subtle poetic quality that elevates everyday subjects into scenes of quiet contemplation. Whether painting flowers, fruit, portraits, or landscapes, her remarkable command of colour and light lends every work a gentle, dreamlike atmosphere.

Her love of nature began in childhood. Raised among the flower fields and orchards of her family's farm near Barcelona, she developed an instinctive understanding of colour that remained central to her work throughout her career. This sensitivity is beautifully evident in Breton Harbour, where the cool reflections of water, weathered fishing boats, and soft Breton light are rendered with understated elegance and harmony.

Lavernia first exhibited in 1962 and went on to receive numerous awards for the emotional depth and technical refinement of her paintings. Her works are represented in private collections throughout France and internationally, admired for their sincerity, lyrical beauty, and timeless appeal.

Coming directly from Angelina Lavernia's studio sale, this charming oil on canvas offers collectors an authentic and beautifully preserved example of the artist's enduring fascination with the landscapes and  rhythms of France.
