A refined example of mid-century German craftsmanship, this ceramic bowl on foot was created in 1956 by Gretel Schulte Hostedde for the renowned Karlsruher Majolika Manufactory.
Beautifully formed with clean modernist lines, the piece reflects the post-war design ethos of simplicity, balance, and quiet elegance. The glaze—typical of Karlsruhe’s mid-century palette—offers depth and subtle variation, giving the bowl a sculptural presence whether displayed alone or used functionally. The glaze palette is light blue, brown and pale grey with a speckled effect. Marked underneath with moulded Karlsruhe- stamp, form number 5842

Gretel Schulte-Hostedde (1902–1973) was a celebrated German ceramist whose work helped shape the aesthetic of 20th-century studio and industrial ceramics. She collaborated with renowned makers such as Hedwig Bollhagen and the Karlsruher Majolika Manufactory, creating elegant yet functional pieces including bowls, ashtrays, and sculptural vessels with distinctly organic forms. Influenced by architect Bruno Paul, Schulte-Hostedde also designed architectural and garden ceramics, bringing her refined sense of form into larger spatial contexts. Her work remains admired for its craftsmanship, modern sensibility, and quiet artistic integrity.
