Mark Azopardi was born in London and is an entirely self-taught artist. He now lives in York. He mostly works in pure watercolour, or a combination of watercolour and pencil.
His shell life-compositions show an amazing eye for detail, colour and composition. He sees these shell paintings as the paintings where he pushes himself technically; others often don’t believe they are genuine paintings as the work is so fine. Perhaps even more impressively, as he is self-taught, he has learnt these techniques by studying old masters and their techniques.
He paints with the shells in front of him either set singularly or in a composition with pebbles, driftwood or feathers. His aim is to show the shells to their best advantage and engage the viewer in their natural beauty.
