Ceremonial tribal paddle spears

by the Duala people of the southwestern Atlantic coast of Cameroon.
end of XIXth, early 20th c
Diameter: 16 cm
Height: 151 cm
Beautiful pair of hand carved hardwood lancet paddles with gorgeous patina. They have a lovely tear drop shape paddle with a criss-cross design, a long handle with a decorative upper end with open work.
Objects of this kind could have a ceremonial use as the Duala believe in water spirits but it also could have been to present to the winner of a canoe race.
